Two snakes, two dragons, two tigers, a rooster, a pig and — auspiciously — a sheep sat down to dinner at the Rotary Club of Leicester Novus on February 19.
They were, of course, celebrating The Year of The Sheep, which began that day.
They exchanged the Cantonese “Happy New Year” greeting above and the Mandarin equivalent Gong Chi Fai Cai, which can be expected to elicit the response “Hong Bao Na Lai” “May I have the red envelope, please?”
That is a reference to the practice of putting money into a red envelope. The waiter at The Terracotta restaurant in High Cross Street had a red envelope… but he explained he had been given it by his boss and he was not about to part with it!
Novus members learned this and a lot more from a table quiz based on Chinese New Year traditions.
They also learned which Chinese year they were born in and which partners they should have married and which they should not!
Those present were reminded that for their meeting on Thursday, February 26, they will be touring Falcons Primary School, George Hine House, Gipsy Lane, Leicester LE5 0TD of which member Jasbir Mann is headteacher.
Falcons is Leicester’s first free Sikh school.
