Newest member helps Novus to honourable quiz result

Professor Atsuko hands back the pen after answering a tough question. Also in the team was Assistant Secretary Frazer Robson and President Maya Vansia with Jim Matthews behind the lens

One of the joys of Rotary is the friendships that are formed within clubs and with members of other Rotary Clubs. Recently, Novus played Blaby Rotary at skittles in the District 1070 Minor Sports. On 09.010.2019 Novus met the Rotary clubs of Blaby, Blaby Meridian,Leicester, Oadby and Wigston in the district quiz.

With several regular Novus quiz team members unable to take part, President Maya Vansia had to draft in two late reserves, Professor Atsuko Miyake and Jim Matthews. Atsuko, Novus’s newest member, is Visiting Professor at Leicester University Department of English. Her area of research is Victorian English Literature, so we were hoping for at least one question in that area.

Of course, even with the added pressure of quizmaster Assistant Governor Nigel Aaron announcing that to the other teams, when — luckily — one such question came up, Atsuko of course answered correctly.

But that was by no means her only success. The rest of her team — and other competitors, too, were stumped about a question relating to a little-known historic site in the South of France, Atsuko instantly remembered the answer from her schooldays. She wrote the answer in Japanese script and Novus members helped her into an approximation of the English spelling — enough to earn Atsuko and Novus the point.

To no-one’s surprise, the event was won by habitual winners the Rotary Club of Oadby with Leicester and Leicester Novus sharing an honourable second place.

Oadby will now go through to the district final — against eight other clubs from across eastern central England — in November.

All agreed that the event, at Cosby Golf Club, had again been great fun and had helped cement long-standing friendships between clubs and individual Rotarians.
