Expert fundraiser Sue Hope educated and entertained Novus Rotary members with her compelling presentation entitled Freedom From Fistula \u2014 Transforming Lives in Sierra Leone.

Aptly-surnamed Sue spoke movingly about how the charity set up by Dame Ann Gloag brings hope to thousands of women and girls in Sierra Leone, Malawi and now Madagascar.

Sue particularly thanked the Rotary Foundation which had helped 60 people in Sierra Leone to graduate after a three-year course as midwife technicians and to provide two Land Cruisers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sue said that in Sierra Leone every year the charity<\/a> carries out 250 surgeries to correct obstetric fistulas, helps deliver 3,000 babies, looks after 20,000 children’s outpatient appointments and gives family planning advice to 3,000 women and – remarkably – men.

Members were so impressed by Sue’s talk that they discussed the possibility of trying to raise money later in the year to pass on to the charity.

Club members learned that the previous evening their team had finished joint third in the District 1070 quiz. Top of the nine competing teams were the past presidents of the Rotary Club of St Ives, with Ashby Castle in second place and Novus sharing third spot with Loughborough Beacon and Grantham Kesteven A, all nine points behind the winners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
