<\/a>On the weekend of the Leicester Belgrave Mela, members of Novus Rotary collected \u00a386 for their cause: End Polio Now. For more than 40 years Rotary members have been raising money to immunise against this terrible disease. President Jim Matthews and his wife Sally went to New Delhi with other Rotarians to immunise children. Jim brought back a banner advertising the immunisation day on Sunday 14th November 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A family shopping near Mirch Masala posed for a photo with the banner. Early in 2011, India was declared Polio free but funds are still needed to prevent Polio coming back. And it’s countries that don’t have sufficient funds, are stuck in war or aren’t even aware of the risk that is Polio. The money donated will be used to continue Rotary’s global campaign to rid the world of Polio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the 26th of May 2024, Novus Rotary along with three other local clubs will hold a duck race in Knighton Park to continue funding this vital programme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When Rotary started this campaign, 1000 people a day where being diagnosed. This year polio is endemic in only Pakistan and Afghanistan and there has only been 14 cases so far this year. Polio is only a plane flight away,” said Jim Matthews. “Novus Rotary is very grateful to member Pradeep Popat for allowing us to collect outside his restaurant and all the people who gave us money.”<\/p>\n\n\n
