School leavers from Mellor Primary are Rotary Stars

For the final time, children at Mellor Community Primary School in Leicester were rewarded by Novus Rotary for being good citizens.

Every year since 2016 the Rotary Club of Leicester Novus has awarded certificates to pupils identified by staff who have gone above and beyond the expected levels of promptness, politeness, kindness, studiousness and service — the word that binds together all 1.2 million Rotarians across the world.

Every year Novus Rotary member Pam Spokes has been helped by teacher Asif Esat.

This year’s crop of Rotary Stars included Nehu Karsan, who was commended for showing compassion, friendship and support to others and for supporting the school’s Family Fund. She is pictured here with Pam Spokes and her husband Rodney, a member of the Rotary Club of Leicester.

Dinal Raj received her certificate from Pam Spokes in recognition of being always cheerful, kind and respectful and for going out of her way to be welcoming to new pupils, showing them loyalty. Dinal is also a notable gymnast and athlete who encourages others to join in and have a go.

The environment has been a particular interest for Ramsha Chauhan during her time at Mellor. She has been a Forest School Champion. Her certificate includes the sentences: “She has demonstrated a positive attitude to her learning, showing determination and resilience, working well independently and collaboratively. She rises to a challenge with a can-do attitude…”

Jim Matthews, the president of Leicester Novus Rotary at the time of its winding up, said: “The attributes shown by these girls — and by dozens of boys and girls before them — are examples of exactly the values that Rotary stands for. We are sure they will all go on to be successful. But most importantly, we believe that by continuing to give the service they have given at school will make them happy.

“I hope that in a few years time they will all reflect on the awards they received at Mellor and will go on to join Rotary International where they can make themselves happy by giving service to others.”
