The tradition of Leap Year Day proposals can be traced back to Ireland in the 5th century, where Saint Bridget complained to Saint Patrick that women had to wait too long for their partners to propose. In response, Saint Patrick declared that on Leap Year Day, women were granted the privilege to propose to men. According to legend, he also introduced a rule that any man who refused a proposal on this day must pay a penalty, such as a kiss or a new dress.

Leap Year Day proposals were then enshrined in the English legal system during the 13th century when Queen Margaret passed a law known as “The Ladies’ Privilege.” This law gave women the right to propose to men on Leap Year Day, and any refusal by men would require the payment of a fine.
