Two members of the Rotary Club of Leicester Novus were honoured by the High Sheriff of Leicestershire, Mehmooda Duke MBE.
Ms Duke gave to Immediate Past President Kartar Singh Bring and to Jim Matthews, who is due to become president on July 1, certificates “in recognition of great and valuable services to the community.”
Kartar is the first Sikh head of a hospitals chaplaincy team, working for Leicester University Hospitals Trust.
Jim retired after having been made redundant in 2009 after 37 years as a journalist with the Leicester Mercury.
The pair were among 20 volunteers invited to an iftar by Ms Duke two evenings before her year in office came to an end.
The role of High Sheriff dates back to Saxon times when the office holder was charged with upholding law and order. Nowadays, High Sheriffs support the monarch and the judiciary and supporting and encouraging crime prevention agencies, the emergency services and the voluntary sector.
She congratulated all the attendees and urged them to carry on volunteering. “Service knows no bounds,” she said.
