Old friends met when the Rotary Club of Leicester Novus welcomed Mark Charlton, head of De Montfort University’s Square Mile Project.
This unique project encourages the university students to do community work within a square mile of the city. Mark had, earlier that day, been inspecting a sports field which will benefit residents. He has also travelled to India to forge links there.
He had been invited to speak by former Leicester Mercury colleague Jim Matthews.
Mark also met member Pam Spokes, who had also worked at the Leicester Mercury. He paid tribute to Pam as he recounted to the meeting that the day before he came to work in Leicester he found that the hotel he had been booked into had not reserved his room.
Rather panicked, Mark eventually tracked down the phone number of Pam, who quickly found him accommodation in another hotel.
