First some facts: There are about 1.2 million Rotary members across the world. They are members of thousands of clubs. To help support them, the clubs are grouped into 530 districts. In Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland there are 4,700 Rotarians in 1,700 clubs which are in 26 districts.
The clubs in Eastern Central England are in District 1070. Those 86 clubs have 2,260 members. They are led by Governor Rodney Spokes, who is charged with visiting every club in his district.
When he visited Novus on November 28, it was like being at home, for he is regarded as a dear friend by all its members, particularly its secretary, Pam, to whom he has been married for several decades!
He gave a detailed overview of Rotary and stressed three areas that he is asking Rotarians in District 1070 to take to heart: Fun, Flexibility and Kindness.
He said that Rotary, whose motto is Service Above Self, is known globally as a group of people of action driven by kindness. But he emphasised that members should be kind to one another as well as to the people we serve.
Incidentally, Rodney made his presentation on a TV set donated to the Rotary Club of Leicester Novus by a generous Loughborough Freecycle member. Novus has offered the TV set to Thurmaston Parish Council, which runs Elizabeth Park, the club’s new ‘home’ for its weekly meetings.
