District Assembly — the annual spring-time gathering of Rotary members from the 89 clubs in the east Midlands of England — is regarded by many of the 500 or so attendees to be one of the best events of the Rotary year.
It is a time for learning about what Rotary is, what Rotary does and what Rotary can do.
So it is appropriate that there is always a break-out session for first-time attendees who may be new members of the international service organisation, which has 1.2 million members across the world.
This year, the ‘Novus newbies’ were Ranjit Singh Mann who was inducted as a member only a fortnight before the May 18 assembly at Loughborough University, and Mai Tsumura, a Japanese English Literature post-graduate researcher studying at Leicester University, thanks to a Rotary grant.
It was special for the other 10 delegates from Novus; their club secretary, Pam Spokes, is married to Rodney Spokes, a past president of the Rotary Club of Leicester, who will become Governor of District 1070 on July 1. They are both in for a very busy year.
All the Novus delegates agreed it had been a morning well spent.
